Donald Trump plans to impose tariffs on the EU and the UK

News in a few minutes: What's happening in the world

Donald Trump declared that US tariffs on imports from the EU will increase, just like with Canada, Mexico and China.

He did not rule out imposing tariffs on UK goods and said the country was "out of line" but the situation could be resolved with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who "has been very good".

Trump added that he will speak with the leaders of Mexico and Canada this Monday, February 3, 2025.

US tariffs of 25% on goods from both countries and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods will take effect from Tuesday.

Canada and Mexico are determined to respond with retaliatory tariffs, while China will implement "appropriate countermeasures" and plans to file a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization.

US Secretary of State holds official meeting with Panamanian president: "Reduce China's influence"

News in a few minutes: What's happening in the world

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has demanded that Panama make "immediate changes" to what he calls China's "influence and control" over the Panama Canal.

The top US diplomat said Panama must act or the US will take necessary measures to protect its rights under a treaty between the two countries.

The warning comes after President Donald Trump's pledge to reclaim the canal and a meeting between Rubio and Jose Raul Mulino, Panama's conservative president, on Sunday.

Mulino told reporters he did not see a serious threat of US military force taking over the canal, saying he had proposed technical-level talks with the US to address Trump's concerns about Chinese influence.

However, Trump's pledge to reclaim the canal has sparked a strong reaction in Panama. Protesters in Panama City burned pictures of Trump and Rubio on Friday.

Netanyahu extends ceasefire talks deadline to consult with Trump

News in a few minutes: What's happening in the world

Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on the eve of his departure from the White House that he had agreed with Trump's Middle East envoy that "negotiations for the second phase of the hostage deal will begin with their meeting in Washington," during which "they will discuss Israel's positions."

The ceasefire, set for just over two weeks, is set to end on March 1. Under the terms of the agreement, talks on the next phase are supposed to begin no later than Monday.

But the Israeli government has yet to publicly unveil a negotiating team for the talks, let alone send them to Qatar or Egypt, where Hamas is sending a delegation this week. Hamas has not commented publicly on Monday's deadline.

The prime minister of Qatar, who has been acting as a mediator in the talks, said on Sunday that there were "no details" on when and how the talks would begin.

"We hope to see some movement in the coming days," Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said during a press conference in Doha.

Hundreds of citizens protest in Germany against CDU/CSU and AfD

News in a few minutes: What's happening in the world

This weekend, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of many German cities to protest against the CDU/CSU and AfD collaboration in the Bundestag.

According to police, around 160,000 protesters gathered in Berlin alone on Sunday afternoon, while organizers claim the number of participants reached up to 250,000. Many demonstrators held banners against the CDU and its candidate for chancellor, Friedrich Merz.

Protesters marched from the streets near the Bundestag to the CDU headquarters, where they flashed their cellphone lights and chanted against Friedrich Merz. They demanded a clear distancing of the CDU from the AfD and expressed their indignation by chanting: "Merz, shame!"

Due to the large turnout, many streets in Berlin were blocked.

Similar demonstrations took place on Saturday and Sunday across almost all of Germany, where thousands of citizens protested against the AfD, right-wing extremists, and the CDU/CSU's cooperation with this party.
