The Archbishop's body is expected to be brought to Tirana, while the details of the funeral ceremony will be determined after the Synod meeting. The ceremony is expected to be of extraordinary proportions, with the participation of representatives of the highest religious level from around the world and international media.
An extraordinary legacy that reborn the Albanian Orthodox Church
Archbishop Anastasios Janullatos was a key figure in the reestablishment of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania. Elected as Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and All Albania on August 2, 1992, he raised the Church from the ruins after decades of religious persecution. Through his tireless efforts, he founded the “Resurrection of Christ” Theological Academy in Durrës and two theological gymnasiums.
His work extended beyond the spiritual mission: The Archbishop built 155 new churches, restored 63 others, and repaired over 160 existing buildings. He established 75 church centers, including schools, medical centers, and youth camps, with a total of about 500 buildings.
He distributed hundreds of tons of food, clothing, and medicine to people in need. He also founded a monthly newspaper, three magazines, and a radio station, as well as creating workshops for the production of candles, icons, and their restoration.
The figure and contribution of Archbishop Anastasios Janullatos will remain a guide and inspiration for future generations, not only for the Orthodox Church, but also for all of Albania.
