Cameron Diaz is reflecting on one of her most iconic films.
Diaz explained how she ended up accepting the role in the 1998 film “There's Something About Mary” in a new video for Vogue . She said the reason was that she found the script very funny.
“The first time I read the script, I literally fell out of bed laughing,” Diaz explained. And she still remembered what scene made her laugh so hard.
"There's a description of a scene when my character's brother, Warren (W. Earl Brown), punches Healy's character (Matt Dillon) in the throat," Diaz said.
"For some reason, the thought of him punching her in the throat was the funniest thing to me. I started laughing so hard I literally fell out of bed and I knew I had to make the movie right away."
In the film, Ted, played by Ben Stiller, has been in love with Mary (Cameron Diaz) since high school, but has lost touch with her. He hires Healy, a private investigator, to find her, but he also falls in love with Mary. Warren punches Healy in the throat when he touches Warren's ears, which Healy has been warned not to do.

"There's Something About Mary" became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time, grossing more than $360 million and becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 1998.
Diaz's performance was particularly praised, she received a Golden Globe nomination and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress.
She went on to star in films such as “Being John Malkovich,” “Charlie's Angels,” “Shrek,” “The Holiday,” and “Gangs of New York,” among many others.
Diaz retired from acting after starring in numerous films in 2014, but is making a comeback this month in "Back in Action" on Netflix.
However, Diaz has said she's not sure if this film will mark a full return to acting. "I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie again and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to do it," she said in December 2024.
