Things are escalating for rapper Rocky and the criminal trial he is currently facing. The rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, is facing serious charges related to a 2021 incident in Hollywood where he allegedly shot a former friend and mobster named A$AP.
The rapper has been charged with two counts of assault with a firearm and if he is found guilty, Rocky could face up to 24 years in prison.
The jury that will handle the case has been selected and his trial is expected to begin soon. With Rocky's trial officially starting, here are some (strange) details you might be interested in knowing about the case:
1. A$AP made a risky move
A$AP refused to plead guilty... twice! "Yes, he was offered a plea deal, but he's not interested because he's actually innocent," Rocky's lawyer said.
2. The judge praises the beauty of A$AP's mom oO
As jury selection progressed on Wednesday, Jan. 22, Judge Arnold asked A$AP about the women sitting next to him. When the rapper identified one of the women as his mother, Renee Black, and the other as his sister, the judge and Rocky's lawyer took some time to talk about his mom's beauty.
3. The jury asked about Rihanna
Even though Rocky is on trial, it seems the prosecution is concerned about the mother of his two children, Rihanna, asking if anyone in the room knew her and if they had ever bought from her company "Fenty Beauty", when the answers are clearly known since Rihanna is no stranger.
4. Racial composition of the jury
In the end, a jury of 12 was selected, none of whom were black. Since the judge is also a white man, the controversy over the exclusion of African Americans from the trial, an issue of great importance to American citizens, could arise.
