Luigi Mangione's family has spoken openly about recent events.
Hours after the 26-year-old was arrested and named as a person of interest in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, his family released a statement saying they were "devastated by this news."
"Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports about Luigi Mangione," the statement obtained by NBC News said. "We only know what we read in the media."
The family continued, "Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi's arrest. We offer our prayers to Brian Thompson's family and ask people to pray for everyone involved."
Mangione, who police said holds two engineering degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, was arrested Dec. 9 at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania after officers received a call of a "suspicious man," according to a criminal complaint obtained by E! News.
