Tests carried out on Liam Payne showed that the former One Direction singer had a mixture of drugs in his system at the time of his death, according to a new report. A preliminary autopsy revealed that Payne had substances such as cocaine and benzodiazepine - a type of sedative - in his body when he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16.
The tests also revealed the presence of "pink cocaine," a recreational drug that typically contains methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA and other substances, according to the report. Also, an improvised aluminum pipe for drug use was found in Payne's room, sources said.
Payne tragically passed away last week after falling from the balcony of his third-floor room at the CasaSur Palermo hotel. He was 31 years old. Emergency doctor Alberto Crescenti said Payne suffered a fractured skull and "extremely severe injuries that led to his immediate death." Attempts by emergency teams to save him were unsuccessful.
After his death, Page Six confirmed that controlled substances and alcohol were found in his room, which was completely destroyed. Multiple witnesses have reported that Payne was behaving "strangely" in the hotel lobby shortly before his death, even breaking his laptop.
Meanwhile, the late singer's girlfriend Kate Cassidy, 25, expressed her grief over the loss of her beloved in a touching statement on Instagram last Friday. “Liam, my angel. You are everything to me. I want you to know that I loved you unconditionally and completely. I will continue to love you all my life. I love you, Liam,” she wrote.
Former band members Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik - also paid tribute to Payne with a rare joint message. "We will always cherish the memories we shared with him," the One Direction members said in a statement last Thursday. "At this time, our thoughts are with his family, his friends and the fans who loved him as much as we do. We will miss you very much. We love you, Liam.”
