If the scents you like rarely get any compliments from others, and if you've often wondered if it's because your favorite perfume just doesn't suit you, now you have an answer.
Caterina Catalani, perfumer, who runs Floris London, is not about external approval: "Fragrance is something very personal and the best perfume is the one that matches you."
It sounds simple, but choosing a perfume (in store, online or on social media) can be complicated. "While some may choose just one fragrance, I believe in the power of variety - your perfume should reflect different aspects of your personality and mood, as well as bring back memories," says Catalani.
In perfumery, always test fragrances on the skin and not on the sample sheet; they react differently on each skin due to our body's unique chemistry, so they can smell different on everyone.
As you wear the perfume, "watch for changes in intensity and persistence to make sure it's what you're looking for," advises Catalani. Remember that if a brand has a hair or body spray version, it's usually a cheaper way to try the scent before buying the whole perfume.
