It is known that Andy Warhol has created pop art portraits over the years, especially of artists who lived in his era, from Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, etc. He is known for strong colors and transforming stars into rare, multi-colored portraits. But Warhol's rare collection does not seem to have escaped the late Princess Diana and King Charles, with two respective portraits that he immortalized in 1982.
Now both of these paintings, titled "Portrait of Princess Diana" and "Portrait of Prince Charles" (then Prince), will be auctioned in London today and are expected to fetch significant sums.
According to Phillips auction house, "the stunning depictions of the princess and prince are based on their official engagement photograph by photographer Lord Snowdon" and were created a year after the wedding of the prince and princess of Wales in 1981.
Diana's painting is expected to fetch $1.6 million to $2.4 million, while Charles' portrait is estimated at $1.3 million to $1.9 million.
In the portrait photos, Diana can be seen wearing an emerald green dress with puffed sleeves, a jeweled and diamond ring on her head, and the photo was taken by Princess Margaret's ex-husband and famous photographer, Lord Snowdon.
In the painting (and the photo Warhol based it on), Diana is shown with short hair, a pair of diamond earrings and a large pendant with stones and lots of glitter.
The artist Warhol chose to paint Diana in almost monochrome tones, while Prince Charles appears in the canvas in black military uniform and positioned against a bright blue background.
