Now, let's talk about the 'pregnancy mood': Myth or reality?

It seems like a typical Albanian expression said out of admiration for women, but in fact, whoever said it - is completely right.

Americans call it "pregnancy glow", while we call it "nur". Whatever the name, the glow women get during pregnancy is scientifically proven.

Pregnancy changes a woman's body in many ways. You're growing a person inside of you, so you can expect anything from varicose veins to dark spots and even acne. But there are also some positive aspects, which, surprisingly, are less talked about.

Rising hormones can change the appearance of your hair and skin, giving you fuller lips, a noticeable glow and thicker hair. If you don't believe us, hear what the pros have to say:

1. Your skin can glow and look healthier.

The idea that pregnant women experience a "glow" during pregnancy is true. The glow comes from an increase in blood volume, estrogen and progesterone.

"Increased blood circulation to the skin gives a 'rosy' appearance and also makes the face look fuller," says Brandye Wilson-Manigat, OB/GYN. "In addition, there is an increase in skin cell turnover and this allows newer cells to come to the surface and dry, old cells to be removed."

What is left behind are healthy cells that increase the skin's radiance and smoothness.

2. Lips can look fuller.

This increased blood volume can also make the lips appear softer.

"The mucous membranes all over the body, especially on the face, become enlarged and filled with increased blood and fluid," explains Sherry Ross, gynecologist and women's health expert.

Lips look fuller and redder as a result of these hormonal changes, but they're not the only part of the face that gets puffy – it's also common for the eyes to look a little puffier too.

3. You may notice an improvement in some skin conditions.

Thanks to hormone fluctuations, you may experience some skin irritations during pregnancy (usually during the third trimester). But if you suffer from psoriasis or eczema, you may find that it clears up during pregnancy because "inflammatory skin conditions tend to be less active during pregnancy," according to Dendy Engelman, dermatologist.

4. You can have thicker and shinier hair.

Your hormones have a lot to do with hair growth, which helps explain why your hair is often voluminous during those nine months.

Pregnancy hormones, especially progesterone, can also cause an increase in sebaceous gland activity leading to a slightly oilier scalp. This makes the hair look thicker and shinier throughout the pregnancy.
This stage is genetically determined, so not everyone will have the same experience.

5. You can have longer and stronger nails.

For the same reasons that hair gets thicker and stronger during pregnancy, the same can happen to your nails.

6. Breasts can increase in size.

This change is driven by an increase in pregnancy hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG).
