But could it play a deeper role in romantic attraction? According to the researchers, humor is not just a social tool, but can serve as a sign of creativity, making it a desirable trait for potential partners.
In a series of six experiments, researchers analyzed how humor affects perceptions of creativity, intelligence, and social skills. Participants were involved in a scenario simulating a dating site, where they answered simple questions such as: "Do you like cats or dogs?". Their responses were not analyzed, but this served as a way to mask the true purpose of the study.
Then, participants were presented with two types of profiles: some with humorous responses and some with neutral responses. For example, a humorous answer to the question "Do you like cats or dogs?" it could be: “Dogs eat their own excrement. Cats sit on their faces while sleeping. Is there an alternative to a turtle?". While a neutral answer would be simpler, like: “Dogs. They are loyal companions."
After reading the profiles, participants rated potential partners on qualities such as creativity, intelligence and social skills. The results showed that humorous profiles were rated as more creative, especially when the humor involved an unusual and creative way of responding.
However, humor did not affect perceptions of intelligence or social skills, suggesting that while humor shows creativity, it does not make people seem smarter or more socially adept.
The study also looked at how mood can affect long-term relationships. Humorous profiles were rated more desirable when it came to serious relationships such as friendship, long-term relationships and marriage.
The researchers suggest that humor is an indicator of adaptability and creative problem-solving—important qualities for maintaining a strong relationship over time.
In this way, humor isn't just about making people laugh—it reflects an individual's ability to face challenges with ease and imagination, essential qualities for coping with the ups and downs of a relationship.
