Nicole posted just hours after arriving in Venice, announcing the news that her "beautiful and brave mother had just passed away."
"I'm totally in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for him," added the "Moulin Rouge" star.
"She shaped me into the person I am today, she guided me in life and I am very grateful to be able to speak her name through director Halina. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking and my heart is broken in these moments.”
A representative for Nicole also confirmed the death of the famous actress' mother, adding that the family needs privacy at this difficult time for everyone. No other details about Janelle's death have been released, but it has been learned that she was 84 years old.
Nicole and her mother are said to have had a close relationship, so much so that they have appeared together at many concerts and important cultural events.

“I grew up as a little girl with a grandmother who loved fashion and knew how to sew, and so did my mother. They loved beautiful clothes. They could make beautiful clothes and my mom has had a lot of influence on my choice of style and clothing throughout my career over the years," the actress told the media a few months ago.
