It is known that even the healthiest and most long-term relationships have their ups and downs. But how do you understand that you are going through "turbid waters" and are very close to separation? Couples therapist Abigail Makepeace explains five situations that could be the cause of an impending breakup.
#1 You don't fight with each other anymore
This may seem counterintuitive, because many people believe that the less fighting, the stronger a relationship. But when a couple no longer wants to solve problems, it can indicate that they are emotionally disconnected.
#2 Live separate lives
It is normal and healthy for partners to have independence within a marriage, regardless of careers or friendships. But if your tendency is to spend more time apart, this is not a healthy indicator of the couple's relationship.
#3 You don't open up to each other
Marriage therapist Marni Feuerman makes a distinction between privacy and secrecy in a relationship. "Privacy is about personal boundaries, while secrecy is about intentionally hiding something."
#4 Rarely talk about the future
When couples stop discussing their goals or plans for the future, it may indicate a “lack of desire to grow and experience life together.
#5 You trust others more than your spouse
Another less obvious sign is if you choose to talk more with a friend, colleague or relative than with your spouse. A strong bond is not built unless you bring your inner world to him/her. If the opposite happens, this is another indication that you are on the verge of separation.
