If you want to lose weight, it's no secret that some exercise should help you achieve your goals. However, a study published in the "Journal of Obesity" compared the weight loss effects of two types of cardio known as jogging and walking. Researchers found a surprising reason that walking slowly and steadily can help you win the weight loss race.
Neurologist Eric Blundy explained the reasons for this result and there seem to be two influencing factors.
"One of the factors is the genetic component and the second is hormones," says Blundy. "Hormones direct different functions. In this study in the Journal of Obesity, hormones such as peptide YY and ghrelin increase hunger when you do cardio,” she adds.
In other words, when you increase the intensity of your exercise and burn more calories, your body will respond by increasing hunger hormones to replace those lost calories. Walking tends to have a more subtle effect on your hormones and hunger, making you lose weight more slowly but surely.
"You run for 45 minutes and burn 500 calories, while another person walks and burns 350 calories. So it seems like running is better, right? But when you finish running, you go home and get 500 calories through food, while when you're done walking, come back and eat normally."
Beyond weight loss, studies show that walking has other health benefits such as regulating the cardiovascular system, mental well-being, peaceful sleep, etc.
