"Queen Bee" Syndrome How to avoid competition at work

"Queen Bee" syndrome occurs when women in high positions, for one reason or another, create a significant distance with their colleagues. This can be manifested through discrimination, refusal to share knowledge or advancement opportunities and a harsh treatment of women in lower roles in the industry. In other words, these women, instead of being supportive and role models for others, may act to keep them down in the hierarchy.

Examples of the "Queen Bee" syndrome in the workplace

Failure to support female colleagues: A woman in a leadership position may avoid promoting or developing other women in order to maintain her status.

Underestimation of achievements: A leader may diminish the achievements of other colleagues to secure her position.

Intolerant behavior: Women in power may be more inclined to criticize the actions or performance of female colleagues in the workplace, while being more tolerant of men in similar roles.

Characteristics of a "Queen Bee"

Women who exhibit these behaviors usually have several characteristics in common:

Thirst for power: Shows a strong desire for power and control, affecting to discriminate against other women in order to maintain their position.

Fierce competition: They see every other woman as potential competition and feel threatened by their success.

Lack of empathy: They do not feel sympathy for the difficult situations of colleagues, showing a cold and distant approach.

Perfectionism: Set high standards for themselves and others, often being critical if these standards are not met.

How to prevent it?

Cultivating a culture of collaboration: Encouraging collaboration among women at work is essential to promoting a healthy and supportive environment.

Transparency and accountability: Establishing clear and fair procedures for evaluations, promotions and other important decisions helps avoid inequities.

Fostering solidarity: Organizing programs that encourage women in senior positions to share their experiences and offer support to their colleagues. This helps build an environment where women support each other to succeed as a team and fosters positive group spirit.
