Did you know that the way you and your partner sit on the couch can say a lot about your relationship? Sitting side by side, having your legs on your partner's lap and holding hands are all positive signs, but standing on opposite sides of the sofa could be an indication that your relationship is in trouble.

Relationship expert Roseland Furniture points out that if you sit on opposite sides of the couch with your partner, it could mean the couple "is separated or has serious problems."

"If this is happening every night and you're never sitting together on the same couch or spending time relaxing together, then it could be a sign that you're starting to live separate lives," she explained.

This is known as a "parallel relationship" when two people live in the same house without any proximity or contact with each other, according to Psychology Today. They are like two parallel lines that never touch, living their lives in close proximity without ever crossing.

However, couples often inadvertently enter into parallel relationships due to other life factors such as busy work schedules or children. But, according to psychologist Charlotte Ball, small actions can be indicators of other things that will happen in the future. If you sit next to each other on the couch without any intimacy in the early stages of a relationship this could be a red flag.

If you tend to put your feet up on your partner while sitting on the sofa, this is a great sign for your relationship as it shows closeness. Holding hands is another sure sign of a happy relationship as you are showing love to each other.

"Touch is a good way to release hormones of happiness, contentment and love, keeping your parasympathetic nervous system charged and full of emotions," concludes Ball.
