The famous French actor, otherwise known as the man with the "angel face", passed away in the early hours of the morning today, at the age of 88. Alain Delon has long been in serious health condition, especially after a stroke that happened to him in 2019.
The cinematographic star, known for his roles in films such as "Purple Noon", "The Leopard" or "Le Samourai", remains one of the personalities of films and art in the world. The official statement of Delon's family states that:
"Alain Fabien, Anouchka, Anthony, as well as (his dog) Loubo, are deeply saddened by the death of their father. He passed away peacefully at his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and family. "
Delon's last public appearance was in May 2019 at the Cannes Film Festival, where he was awarded the Palme d'Or. With his fantastic blue eyes, the actor was often called "the French Frank Sinatra", but it seems that this was a comparison that Delon did not like.
Beyond the protagonist in the French cinema, Alain Delon did not manage to penetrate rapidly in Hollywood with roles and protagonist films, despite the fact that the famous directors Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino have expressed in their public appearances that they were indebted to the roles offered to Delon.
Off screen, he has courted controversy over his stances on everything from gay marriage being legalized in France in 2013 to regretting the abolition of the death penalty. Delon publicly defended the far-right National Front and called founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, an old friend, to congratulate him when the party won local elections in 2014.
Towards the end of his life, Delon was in the media spotlight as part of a family dispute over the custody of his children and his wife, which grabbed headlines in French media in April this year when a court ruled that he no longer had complete freedom to manage his assets.
Alain was known as one of Europe's most prominent actors and sex symbols of the 1960s and 1970s. He won critical acclaim for his roles in films such as: "Rocco and His Brothers", "Eclipse", "Cheetah" etc. During his artistic career, he collaborated with several well-known directors, such as Luchino Visconti, Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Melville, Michelangelo Antonioni and Louis Malle.
In 1985, he won the César Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film Our Story. In 1991, he was awarded the title of "Legion d'Honneur de France", while at the 45th Berlin International Film Festival he was awarded the "Golden Bear" award.
His love life was also eventful. Before ending his relationship with Romy Schneider, which began in 1958 on the set of "L'amante pura", he had a relationship with the German singer Nico, with whom he had a son in 1962. In 1964, he married Francine Canovas and from this relationship the son Anthony was born, but after four years the couple divorced.
In the period from 1968 to 1983 he was associated with the actress Mireille Darc, while from 1987 to 2001, Delon had by his side the model Rosalie van Breemen, mother of Anouchka and Alain-Fabien. By his side, in the last days of his life, the famous actor had Hiromi Rollin, 66 years old, his loyal assistant-director for thirty years.
