Mental health problems all over the world and the figures from the "Centers for Disease Control and Prevention" are indicative of the problems faced by different age groups, but especially teenagers.

According to a 2022 mental health report, about 15% of teenagers aged 12 to 17 had experienced a depressive moment in their lives, while 37% had persistent feelings of sadness and sadness.

Beyond the numbers, but also the personal history of dealing with mental health problems over the years, Selena Gomez has decided to help these people through a collaboration with Google. To fund the initiative, Google.org, a subsidiary of Google, is donating $10 million to various mental health and education organizations such as: DonorsChoose, JED Foundation, Child Mind Institute, The Steve Fund ” etc.

"I know that being a teenager makes young people feel lonely and often bored," Gomez wrote in an Instagram post to announce the new initiative. "We need to give teens resources so they can build strong mental health habits."

Why Is Selena Gomez Starting A Teen Mental Health Initiative?

As a part of the world of show and fame, Gomez has experienced the pressure of being a celebrity, so she has faced mental health issues more than once, and has even spoken publicly about them. In her documentary "My Mind and Me", the artist talked about her bipolar diagnosis and the decision to enter a rehabilitation center. As a result, the career trajectory has changed, along with its purpose over the years.

"I know firsthand that loving and caring adults make a big difference in a teenager's life," she said. "Few people are able to help students and teachers by offering them help, especially when it comes to mental health."

How does this initiative work?

Google is committing to donate $500 to all mental health awareness initiatives on the DonorsChoose platform. In addition, teachers will receive a $200 bonus each time they complete one of the mental health training sessions offered by the nonprofit.
