The first thing customers do when they check into a hotel room is often to take their clothes out of their suitcases and put them in the closet. But, be careful!
"In the closets or nightstands of hotels, especially those made of wood material and with cracks or joints in their shape, there is a high risk of infection by insects. So there are not only bedbugs in hotel beds, but also in closets, despite the fact that they are cleaned often," says the doctor.
If you want more cleanliness on your next trip, the professionals say to start by checking every corner of the drawers or dresser, every space or crevice where insects can hide. In short, "inspect" every seam, fold, back of chairs, pillows, etc.
Beyond the bed, Dr. Singh adds that bed bugs can be found in other places, such as walls, ceilings, picture frames, electrical outlets, etc. In addition, insects can pass along walls and ceilings to move between rooms or find new hiding places.
To mitigate the risk of insects attacking your clothing, Singh suggests keeping clothing in hanging spaces rather than drawers.
Another idea could be to place your luggage directly after checking into the room, right in the hotel bathtub. This location is rated as the safest to avoid bug infestations, while you take the time and space to check in your room and make sure it's a bug-free environment.
