The physical departure of Ismail Kadare is undoubtedly one of the biggest losses in Albanian literature and in our national pride, not only for the extraordinary talent of the late writer, but because Kadare presented Albania to the world in the highest artistic aspect. He passed away yesterday (July 1, 2024), at the age of 88.
To honor the best contemporary writer, the Albanian government has announced 2 days of national mourning, exactly July 2 and 3. The decision was published in the Official Gazette and days of mourning will be observed in all state institutions and the red and black flag will be flown at half-mast.
Meanwhile, a special state commission will take care of the organization of the tributes of the state ceremony. The tributes and the ceremony will take place in the premises of the National Theatre, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Also, at 1:00 p.m. on July 3, all activities will be stopped and 1 minute of silence will be held to honor the writer Kadare.
