What is heat stroke in children and how should parents manage it

School has already ended for most of the children and their various age groups, so outdoor activities are one of their main commitments. Games with peers, the beach or swimming pools, while the temperatures rise every day, are among the favorite activities for children, but there are some things that should be taken care of, especially by parents.

One of them is heatstroke, and here's what you need to know:

Heatstroke is clinically understood when your body reaches a temperature of up to 40 degrees Celsius or higher. Organ damage can occur at these temperatures. Your body stops sweating, so you lose an important cooling mechanism.

"Heat stroke is a serious, life-threatening condition," says pediatrician Jen Trachtenberg. Children are especially susceptible to overheating. "When you are younger, you have a smaller blood volume, so there are more chances of dehydration," continues the doctor.

What are the symptoms of this condition?

If your child runs outside on a hot day, it's normal for him/her to sweat, have red cheeks and be thirsty. Other symptoms you should watch out for are as follows:

-High body temperature

- Hot and dry skin

-Physical weakness

- Dizziness

-Slurred speech

-Headache

- Leg cramps

- Nervousness

-Mixed

-Vomiting

-Rapid breathing or rapid heartbeat

When should parents go to the doctor? seek medical attention?

If the child becomes confused or loses consciousness, it is time to go to the emergency room. For less serious symptoms of overheating, give your child water and help cool him down using ice packs and cold water. The exception to the water rule is babies, as they are not given water if they are under six months old. The doses of breast milk or formula are added to this age group.

How to manage this situation with children?

-Play outside in the early morning or evening

- Hydrate the children before leaving the house

-Take a break from the game every hour

-Carry a bottle of water throughout the day

-Wear loose, light-colored clothing that absorbs sweat

-Look for shaded areas
