Many of you who are reading this article are probably happy that the cat or cats you have at home may not suffer from pain for long, as thanks to artificial intelligence it is possible to recognize this condition quickly.
Artificial intelligence (AI) can detect if your cat is in pain by scanning the animal's face with an app created by veterinarians and researchers in Japan.
The app was tested on six thousand images of cats and experts say it has an accuracy of over 95%.
"Veterinarians can already tell to some extent if an animal is in pain. "More than 70% of older cats suffer from arthritis or bone pain, but only 2% of them go to the hospital," said Professor Edamura, head of the Animal Medical Center at Nihon University.
"So rather than a definitive diagnosis, we use the app as a tool to let cat owners know if the situation is normal or not," he adds.
More than 230,000 people have used the app since its launch in Japan last year. Mayumi Kitakata lives in Tokyo with her 14-year-old cat, Chi. She uses the app to read the cat's face every day.
"My cat is at an age where more and more diseases will appear. So getting to the vet on time is very important for him and for me,” added Kitakata.
The application has started to be used in Europe and is expected to find more support in every corner of the world.
