We're officially in strawberry season, but do you know the right way to eat them? Karan Rajan, a doctor at the NHS (National Hospital Service) in the United Kingdom says that cutting the leaves of this fruit is wrong, as there is an important reason behind it: it increases the nutritional value in the body!
Surely, many lovers of this fruit are surprised after this doctor's instruction, since the leaves are often cleaned for the sake of hygiene, doctor Karan says that you should stop cutting the leaves of this fruit.
"A piece of strawberry with leaves has the same nutritional value as berries," he says. Strawberry leaves are packed with polyphenols, which are excellent antioxidants for the body.
A diet rich in antioxidants can reduce the risk of many diseases (including heart disease and some cancers). According to the Better Health Channel, antioxidants scavenge free radicals from the body's cells and prevent or reduce damage caused by oxidation.
In addition, strawberry leaves contain almost as much vitamin C as the strawberry berry. According to the Mayo Clinic, vitamin C is a nutrient that your body needs to form blood vessels, muscles and collagen in bones. Vitamin C is also vital to the body's healing process.
The renowned doctor adds that strawberry leaves also contain other nutrients like magnesium and extra bits of fiber, so eating them is a great way to pack more nutrients into your diet.
