The drills are taking place two days after the country's new prime minister, Lai Ching-te, who has a more democratic approach to Taiwan, was elected and a few days ago called on China to stop the pressure and threats.
The People's Liberation Army of China announced that it would conduct joint military exercises, including the air, sea and land forces, which means that the army and navy are also part of this "project".
