Muscle problems, back pain, a fragile mental health... These seem to be some of the main reasons why a record number of women are leaving the workplace, according to figures and studies over the past year.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) study found that 1.54 million women in the UK and worldwide will be out of work in 2023 due to various illnesses, an increase of 48% compared to the last five years. This figure translates into 500,000 unemployed women due to health problems.
The figures show that prolonged illness is the main reason why women are losing their jobs. Years ago, the most common reason was childcare or family care responsibilities. The study also found that the number of women out of work due to illness was increasing at a much faster rate than for men.
Why are so many women leaving work due to illness?
Poor mental health was one of the main reasons for the rise in numbers, with the number of women out of work due to depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses up to 69,000 women over the past five years, an increase of 27%. . An additional 126,000 women were added to the list of those who gave up work due to muscle problems, back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, wrist pain (an increase of 47%), while 19,000 women chose to stay at home due to the battle with cancer.
