The US Congress voted in favor of the bill to shut down TikTok, in case its owner does not sell his shares. The House of Representatives decided that the application should not be accessed by US citizens, as it was included in a foreign policy package that the US has undertaken.
Joe Biden has said that he will sign the decision that will be made on the application, after the Senate decides what will happen. If the bill is returned to the floor, TikTok's owner will have 9 months to find another buyer, or face having the app banned from users in the US.
Officials of TikTok have stated that a ban on the use of the popular application will "infringe on the free speech" of all 170 million American users. In recent months, the alarm has often been raised about the popularity of this application, as well as the fact that it can intercept people's data.
US officials suspect that TikTok is linked to China and shares information about its users with Beijing, although spokespersons for TikTok have often denied the allegation.
