Weight gain during the sweet waiting months can be something difficult to accept for many women, despite the fact that it is something normal. On average, most of them gain between 10 and 13 kilograms during pregnancy, according to the NHS (National Health Service).
But among expectant mothers there are those who try to lose weight during this period, something that is never advised. In fact, deliberately losing weight by dieting or working out at the gym can be dangerous for both mother and baby.
Kate Hilton, a clinical dietitian says: “For most pregnancies, the focus should be on eating a healthy balanced diet to support the baby's growth and development. There are many risks if you try to lose weight during pregnancy, as this increases the chances of giving birth to a low birth weight baby. Restricting calorie intake can also lead to insufficient nutrients needed for fetal development, such as folic acid, iron, calcium and protein, etc."
It can be mentally, emotionally and physically challenging to accept your new body, but experts say you shouldn't try to lose weight during this period.
She said: “Trying to lose weight during pregnancy is not advised because you can deprive your baby of the nutrients it needs to grow and develop. Being pregnant is not the time to diet, restrict calories or achieve personal goals. This is a time to nourish your body and that of your growing baby,” Hilton continues.
During pregnancy it is advisable to focus on healthier foods, such as vegetables, proteins, whole carbohydrates and as little processed foods as possible. It is good to monitor your weight and adjust your eating habits during the nine months
