The European Union will conduct an investigation into whether TikTok has breached internet content rules, which are related to protecting children and ensuring transparent advertising.
The head of the European Union for industry, Thierry Breton, said that the protection. Children have been a priority and the investigation into TikTok will include age verification and the safety of accounts created by children.
"As a platform that reaches millions of children and teenagers, TikTok must fully comply with the established rules and play an important role in protecting minors online. We are launching this formal process to ensure that proportionate action is taken to protect the physical and emotional well-being of Europe's young people. We must spare no effort to protect our children", said Thierry Breton.
During April 2023, the Data Supervision in Ireland, fined TikTok with 245 million euros, for violating the law established by the European Union, for the data of children in social networks. In the same month, the Information Commission in the United Kingdom fined the company 15 million euros for illegally processing the data of children under 13 years of age.
On the other hand, spokespersons for TikTok said that the social network will continue to work with industry experts to provide safety to young people who use the platform and that it will gladly explain the matter to the European Commission.
"TikTok has created features to protect teenagers and keep children under 13 off the social network. This is an issue facing the entire industry," said a company spokesperson.
No deadline has been set for the investigation and the outcome will depend on various factors, including the complexity of the case.
