Children raised by narcissistic parents may experience problems over the years. This not only affects their development, but leaves emotional scars in adulthood.
But what are the signs that you are such a parent? According to therapists, there are several red flags that indicate that you are a narcissistic parent and more!
#1 Lack of empathy
Narcissists have no connection to empathy, even when it comes to parents. They don't care if you are busy, if you have commitments, they want feedback at any time.
#2 They have a constant need for admiration
Narcissistic people are always looking for admiration and often demand this from their children as well. By expecting their children to meet their standards, these parents see this as a form of fulfillment and admiration.
#3 Manipulation through guilt
There is no safer "trip" for a narcissist than guilt. Narcissistic parents may engage in manipulative behavior, using guilt or the compulsion to control their children as explanatory motives for any situation.
#4 They never apologize
"Sorry" is not in their lexicon! Most of the time, these parents do not see or appreciate that they have done something wrong, so they never say this phrase.
#5 Overly critical behavior
They give more attributions of ability and intelligence to themselves, so they tend to be more critical of children.
#6 Everything is a race
Parents and children must be and function as a team. But if your parent is a narcissist, you will be in a lifelong rivalry in every aspect of life.
#7 Zero boundaries
Boundaries are hard to set and even follow. Narcissistic parents are very obsessed with them and find it difficult to respect them in relation to their children. But perhaps they forget that it makes children feel insecure and unappreciated.
