If you've heard about the most sensational divorces of the past 30 years, you've probably heard the name Laura Wasser. The well-known divorce lawyer with a long professional career in this field lists such VIP names in her legal cases as Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears or Ariana Grande.
It seems that celebrity divorces are not that different from civil separations, except for the millions that are "played" in between. "I always say that divorce is the moment that equalizes all couples," says Wasser. "People experience the same fear and heartache whether they're famous or not."
But, apart from the facts, the motives that lead to the separation of many couples are almost the same for everyone. "The reason people get divorced is because they don't communicate," says the renowned lawyer.
An extramarital affair, problems with alcohol, the inability to communicate and "find the language" among the problems are some of the reasons that lead partners to the doors of the courts.
The lawyer's advice is to prioritize important conversations before saying "YES" at the altar. Discussions such as, should children be sent to public or private schools? Should your parents live with you or alone in their old age? These and many other topics should be addressed before marriage in order to save yourself some money and heartache during the marital journey.
Partners' needs may change over the course of a marriage, in which case good communication is key.
By having the difficult conversations before or early in your marriage, you can cultivate healthy communication habits that better serve you and your partner.
