Now that online options have just been added and you can choose your ring with a click, it's good to know the exact measurement to avoid problems.
If you find the ring you like, decide which finger you will wear it on and get to work with the measurements.
Find a sticker/paper that is the width of the ring you want and tie it around your finger. Hold both corners in one place and draw a line at the point where the two ends overlap each other. Remove the paper and place it next to a ruler. Measure the distance from the corner to the line you drew. Open one of the ring measurement charts online and find out what your measurement is.
Another option that is still safer in terms of margin of error is to physically use a ring gauge.
What if you want to find out the size of the ring in secret, how to act?
In this case, take one of the rings you've seen the person wear most often and print out a chart online with some examples of rings by shape and size. In this case, I place the printed sheet under the ring and try a few of the circles to figure out which one the physical ring fits.
