Is it harmful to let children believe in Santa? Psychotherapists answer

The most beautiful time of the year is here! Lights, festive decorations, decorated Christmas trees and the atmosphere of Christmas and New Year seem to change the air all over the world, but especially for children. The latter, like every year, get ready for that man with the white beard and the big sack in his arms who comes with gifts full of gifts to distribute all over the world.

Most parents try to keep the magic of Santa alive for their children by making it a ritual to leave milk cookies outside the door for Santa to consume, who then uses the flying coaster to deliver gifts to the children.

But should we let children believe in the existence of Santa Claus? What to do when Santa's magic wears off?

Is it harmful to let children believe in Santa? Psychotherapists answer

Many parents want to keep Santa alive for their children and if so, but is there any risk of psychological damage to children if you tell them that a magical man is going to sneak into the living room and leave presents under the tree? Not really, at least according to psychotherapist Amy Morin.

She says you won't cause any psychological harm if you let your child believe in Santa, even if he/she believes longer than most other children their age.

But it's more important, according to Morin, to bring it up as a topic when they start to question Santa's existence. "Insisting they have to believe or threatening them with no gifts if they don't believe, that's not helpful," says Morin.

"Instead, be honest," she continues. "Tell the kids the truth if they ask if there's a Santa they don't think is real?" If they eventually say they don't believe it, Amy says it's important to be honest when asked such questions.

Ultimately, whether or not you want your child to believe in Santa is a personal decision that is unlikely to cause any major problems. It's more about how you handle the child's faith and what you tell them when they start asking about this protagonist being during the holidays.
