George Clooney said Matthew Perry had a hard time being happy while filming Friends because of his alcohol and drug addictions.
Clooney told Deadline that at one time, Perry's dream was to land a role on a sitcom, which happened when he landed the role of Chandler Bing on Friends in 1994.
"He was like a kid and all he would say to me was, 'I just want to get a sitcom, man.' I just want to be on a regular sitcom and be the happiest man on earth,'” Clooney said.
"And he became part of one of the best ever. He was not happy. It did not bring him joy, happiness or peace,” he added.
“[His case] just goes to show that success, money and all that stuff, doesn't automatically bring you happiness. You have to be happy with yourself and your life.”
Matthew Perry died from the acute effects of ketamine while contributing factors included drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine - which is used to treat opioid use disorder.
In his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, published in 2022, Perry wrote that he developed an alcohol addiction as a teenager as well as an addiction to painkillers after an accident in 1997.
