Hair color professionals say you should choose your best "adventure" to cover grays. Everything related to the structure and type of hair should be in focus, say hairdressers. “There really isn't one specific hair color line that is better than the others based on formulation alone. The key is to find a hairdresser who can correctly determine the right formulation for your hair type and texture," says Mandy B, color and hair therapist.
Is it better to go for lighter or darker shades to cover grays?
"If you have natural hair that you haven't dyed before, permanent color can usually lighten it one to two levels from the starting point. So if your hair is dark brown, your permanent color choices are limited to medium to deep dark browns," says Shvonne Perkins, hair color mixing expert.
Another detail to keep in mind is that warm shades like golden blondes often cover grays more completely than cool winter tones. That's because gray hair isn't actually pigmented, so the warmth and depth help fill in the missing pigment.
Guy Tang, a celebrity hairstylist, says that going lighter is the safest option to cover grays, as lighter shades can better camouflage gray hair. "Lighter tones tend to blend better with gray hair, making the difference less noticeable," he says.
So, if you have gray hair but are still at a loss to choose the right color to cover it, go for lighter shades for a softer, more natural look, especially if you have long, gray hair.
