One of Silicon Valley's most hyped tech startups, Humane just launched its first device: the Ai Pin, a standalone device and software platform.
Humane, run by former Apple employees Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, has touted Ai Pin as the future of computing and the device that will replace smartphones. Of course, that remains to be seen.
That Pin is designed to interact with large language models, not apps, and to speak rather than type. Here are some of the futuristic features of Ai Pin:
Humane is promoting Ai Pin as an anti-smartphone, where instead of looking at the screen, you're able to interact with the world around you. But sometimes, you need visuals. To compensate for this, the Ai Pin is built with a "laser ink display" that can be projected onto your palm.
Because there is no screen, Ai Pin's primary mode of communication is through audio. Humane is using OpenAI's model for voice commands. So you can send messages to people in your contact list just by speaking. It can also summarize all messages in your email.
That Pin can tell you facts about foods. The device can supposedly "see" a handful of almonds in your palm and tell you how much protein it has - but it may not be entirely accurate.
Another feature is real-time translation. That Pin can recognize the language being spoken and translate it back to you, or vice versa, with a few simple commands.
Unlike Siri, Alexa or Google Assistant, Ai Pin doesn't passively listen to your words. It only turns on when the owner of the device manually activates it.
That Pin costs $699, and Humane will begin taking orders on November 16 and will begin shipping in early 2024.
Question from the floor: How are we going to take selfies with this?
@one37pm One of Silicon Valley's most hyped tech startup, @hu.ma.ne, just dropped its first consumer device. It's called the Ai Pin and it is a standalone device and software platform built by the group up for AI. This pin comes integrated with ChatGPT and communicates with users via voice assistance and/or projecting an image onto the users palm. The company founder sees this as a future replacement for smartphones but we are not exactly sure how to take selfies with this thing.
