Matthew Perry knew his legacy would always be associated with "Friends," but he wanted to be remembered for his contributions off-camera.
The actor, best known for playing the character Chandler Bing on the sitcom Friends, has been open about his problems with alcohol and addiction and wrote candidly about his struggles in the memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing".
In his book he wrote: "I think you have to realize all your dreams to realize that they are the wrong dreams." "What are your dreams now?" he asked on the "Q with Tom Power" podcast.
"The best thing for me is if someone comes up to me and says, 'I can't stop drinking, can you help me?' I say 'yes' and I deal with it and I really do. That's the best thing,” replied the late actor.
"And I've said it for a long time - when I die, I don't want 'Friends' to be the first thing mentioned. I want that to be the first thing mentioned and I'll live the rest of my life proving it."
Perry did a lot to help others with problems with alcohol and drug addiction. For example, in 2013, he turned his Malibu home, known as the Perry House, into a residential facility for people trying to stop using alcohol.
In addition, he has performed and written powerful monologues with messages about addictions.
Matthew Perry was found dead in the bathtub at his home in Los Angeles. An autopsy, pending a toxicology report, will determine the cause of death.
