Throughout her life, the late princess had too many iconic fashion moments to mention: the black sheep sweater, the "revenge dress" or the shorts. In the collection of not-so-casual clothing, the jacket of the American football team Philadelphia Eagles
has been worn on several occasions by Lady Diana. Her former bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, explains why Diana had this bomber jacket on her list of favourites.
"Diana always wanted normalcy," he explains to ESPN. "Being a member of the royal family, that was almost impossible. Neither William nor Harry, when they were children, wanted their mother to wear extravagant dresses or jewels when she walked them to school."
Wharfe adds: “Diana wasn't there to impress people at school. She wanted to be seen as a young mother who was connected to the everyday life of her sons. She liked to be different, that was her style. With this jacket, Lady Diana wanted to show that she was a normal mother with a style that people liked."
The late princess first received this jacket after meeting Jack Edelstein, the statistics man for the Philadelphia Eagles football team. They met at the funeral of Princess Grace of Monaco in 1982. During a conversation between them, Diana had expressed that her favorite colors were silver and green (which are also the colors of the Eagles), and Edelstein decided to send her a gift a little later, among them the famous jacket.
"If Diana were alive today, she would be thrilled that this jacket, almost 30 years later, has become the object of public attention," said her former bodyguard.
