In the world we live in we take airports and air travel for granted whenever we want! But it seems that there are five countries in Europe that have no airports at all. Small places, limited spaces or cities built on the slope of a mountain... The reasons can be different.
#1 Andorra
Nestled between France and Spain in the Pyrenees Mountains, Andorra is a small, landlocked micro-state famous for its ski resorts. The nearest major airports are located in France (Toulouse) and Spain (Barcelona).
# Monaco
The Principality of Monaco, a sovereign city-state and the second-smallest country in the world, is part of the French Riviera known for glamorous casinos but not for airports. The nearest major airport is Nice Côte d'Azur in France.
# San Marino
Located north-east of Italy, San Marino is the fifth smallest country in the world. It is located on the slope of Mount Titano and is only 13 km long. San Marino is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. The nearest airport is Federico Fellini International Airport in Rimini, Italy.
#4 The Vatican
It is otherwise known as the smallest country in the world. Only 44 hectares, it would be difficult to imagine an airport in this place. The independent state within the state of Rome does not have an airport, but the closest is Leonardo da Vinci in Rome's Fiumicino.
#5 Liechtenstein
The fourth smallest country in Europe is German-speaking Liechtenstein, located between the Alps of Austria and Switzerland. This country is among the least visited in Europe, but one of the corners of the world where you can escape if you want absolute peace. The nearest major airports are in Switzerland (Zurich airport) and Austria (St. Gallen-Altenrhein airport).
