Drink your coffee in the morning and catch yourself counting how many spoons of sugar you have thrown? Leave the house with your car keys in hand and forget where you parked the night before? Examples of forgetfulness abound, but a new study shows that forgetfulness is linked to caffeine, which can help people improve their memory as the years go by.
Researchers at the University of Tsukuba in Japan say they have analyzed Trigonelline (TG), a plant alkaloid found in coffee that directly affects memory. Experimentation was first done on rats, where a number of them were given to ingest TG for 30 days and it was found that the rats had a significant improvement in memory during the clinical test.
Mice were placed in a tub of turbid water and tracking during the test was done to see how well they would remember the way to the surface of the water by swimming.
When examining the mice, the researchers say they divided them into groups: mice that had ingested TG and those that had not ingested anything.
To reinforce coffee's role in memory enhancement, a report published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine determined that men and women who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee each day were up to 30% less likely to die from any disease. .
For people who have heart problems, diabetes, Alzheimer's or other serious diseases, a doctor's consultation is what they need.
So we can't tell you right now to overdo it with cups of coffee, but if you have problems with forgetfulness, add small doses of caffeine that studies say can strengthen your memory.
