"So-called seasonal hair loss occurs frequently, especially in women," says dermatologist Christian Merkel. "It happens around the same time of year, so late summer or fall."

"Since hair loss recurs every year in many women, the assumption is that it has something to do with their genetics," he says.

Hair loss in autumn is also related to the stages of hair growth. Each hair goes through two phases of growth: the life phase and the resting phase. In the first stage, hair grows over the years. The remaining 10% is in the resting phase, which lasts about two to four months. During this phase, the hair root regenerates.

The most plausible explanation may have to do with the seasons. "In the summer, we need more hair for protection from the sun, so the hair is there," the doctor continues. "At the end of the year, with lower temperatures and less UV radiation, hair starts to fall out."

Usually, the period of hair loss lasts up to three months. After the change period, new hairs form again from the hair follicles.

What can you do to "save" from seasonal hair loss?

Dermatologist Merkel says that hair loss until the end of the year is not a disease, so there is no need to treat it as such. But there are hair care products, such as pharmaceutical shampoos, that can help new hair grow at this stage.

But if you have hair loss in the fall, you should add hair care products during the summer season. This also applies to nutritional supplements.

A popular supplement for strengthening hair is zinc. Zinc is found in foods such as: cereals, legumes, nuts, meat, fish and dairy products.
