French authorities claim the iPhone 12 exceeds European radiation exposure limits and ordered a pause in sales for now and repairs to phones already sold to customers.
The French National Frequencies Agency said it "has asked Apple to withdraw the iPhone 12 from the French market, starting on September 12, 2023, as measures show that the specific rate of radiation absorption exceeds the established limits". The agency said that the iPhone 12 does not comply with European Union regulations.
Countering the agency's claims, Apple stated that it had already provided the agency with multiple laboratory results conducted by the company and independent third parties that demonstrated the device's compliance with relevant SAR regulations and global standards.
SAR - measure of the rate of absorption of RF (radio frequency) energy by the body from the source being measured - in this case, a mobile phone.
Apple disputed the claims and stated that it would continue to work with the agency to demonstrate that the iPhone 12 poses no risk.
