Spoiler: Washing your hair once a week is not the best option, even when your hair looks clean. The debate "how often should you wash your hair" continues to be heated, but experts say that once a week is not enough to have clean hair.
 
Rosi Fernandez, hair stylist and director of "Ananda Ferdi" says that it is not advisable to wash your hair once a week (except for cases where the shampoo is suggested by experts and manages to exfoliate the scalp and not create problems), as the follicles* are blocked and they don't get air. Follicle* - Hair is organized into groups of 1-4 strands of hair called follicles. Each follicle is a complete biological unit and contains nerves, blood vessels, sebaceous glands and collagen.
 

 
The main reason why we need to wash our hair more than once a week is precisely related to environmental pollution, and in 2023, pollution has become more ruthless than ever with our hair. Hair gets dirty without us realizing it and even though we think it's clean, again, car smoke, sweat, cigarette smoke and everything that happens around accumulates in our hair.
 
According to Fernandez, when hair is washed once a week, the follicles become blocked and this can lead to a number of problems: scalp redness, itching, sensitivity, dandruff and even hair loss. Small dust particles, often invisible to the eye, block the oxygenation of the hair, so it is suggested to wash the hair more often, even if it is thick and strong.
 
Now, in short, how many times a week should you wash your hair?
 
In fact, there is no universal rule for the frequency of hair washing. Fernandez points out that you have to consider where you live and the lifestyle you lead.
 
"It is not the same to live in a city where the pollution is much higher than in the suburbs or in the countryside. The climate, the use of bicycles, motorbikes, cars, sports, physical activities, the quality of the water you wash your hair with, all have an effect." However, when the hair is dry and thick, experts advise to wash it at least 2 times a week to remove the residues accumulated on the scalp and that damage the hair.
 
Fernandez also recalls the importance of rubbing the shampoo in the hands before application, especially if it is an organic product. Also, proper rinsing is very important, as it provides shine to the hair.
