Spain's 2023 World Cup-winning goalscorer Olga Carmona learned her father had passed away after Sunday's final against England, which Spain won 1-0.
The Spanish Football Federation announced the death of her father. "The soccer player learned the bitter news after the World Cup final. We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep pain," the federation wrote. "We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football."
Olga Carmona has long been considered one of the talents of Spanish football. She has previously said that her passion for sports began after her father enrolled her brothers in football.
"I went every evening to watch them practice," she said. "I ended up wanting to play so much that I said to myself, 'Why don't I go out and train with them?'
Spain became only the second country, after Germany, to win both the men's and women's tournaments.
