It's no secret that many women experience discomfort during the menstrual cycle. From cramps to hormonal changes, this is a challenging time for many. But did you know that periods also affect hair? A former hairdresser tells about her experiences with clients during the cycle, who complained of greasy hair and more sensitive scalp. Therefore, hairdressers call this period as "hair periods".
What causes the 'hair cycle'?
The menstrual cycle is usually 28 days long, but each cycle is different depending on hormones. Estrogen is the dominant hormone during the first half of the cycle, while progesterone is during the second half. "As a result, the skin becomes more oily, the pores become blocked and the acne starts to get irritated. These changes also affect the scalp, making it more oily," says dermatologist Hadley King for the Hypebae platform. "During this stage, dry shampoo and a clarifying shampoo can be helpful."
"After the end of the cycle, estrogen levels begin to increase and testosterone decreases," continues Dr. King. This can cause your scalp and hair to feel dry. During this stage, hair conditioners and moisturizing products are helpful. Dr. King suggests using shampoos that contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin, castor oil, and cucumber extract to help with hydration.

How to treat hair during the cycle?
“The best way to treat dry hair is to target the scalp first. Use moisturizing products with ingredients like avocado oil, shea butter and argan oil,” says Kat Thompson, celebrity hairstylist for Hyebae. "Shampoo and conditioner should have nourishing ingredients. Add a hair mask for hydration and shine," she concludes.
