Bradley Cooper is facing criticism for his performance in "Maestro" after the release of the trailer for the biopic about the conductor Leonard Bernstein.
Critics on social networks did not agree with the fact that Bradley Cooper has put on a prosthetic nose to resemble the late conductor and the makeup on him reinforces anti-Semitic stereotypes (stereotypes against Jews).
Other people raised concerns that Bradley Cooper is not of Jewish descent, so another actor could have been cast in his place.
Beyond the criticism, however, Bernstein's three children, Jamie, Alexander and Nina, released a statement about the backlash Cooper has faced.
"Bradley Cooper involved the three of us in every step of his amazing journey as he made the film about our father,” their statement reads. “It breaks our hearts to see any misrepresentation or misunderstanding of his efforts."
They also directly addressed criticism of Cooper's physical appearance as their father.
"It happens to be true that Leonard Bernstein had a beautiful and large nose. Bradley chose to use makeup to enhance his likeness and we're totally on board with that."
Bradley Cooper is the writer, co-producer and director of Maestro, a film that follows his 25-year marriage to Felicia Montealegre, played by Carey Mulligan. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are also among the film's producers.
Leonard Bernstein was an American conductor, composer and pianist. Considered one of the most important conductors of his time, he was the first American conductor to receive international acclaim.
