She decides to leave the world of the famous doll, to join you in the real world while wearing a yellow dress, not bold, but light.
"Barbie's outfit is meant to represent change," explains the film's costume designer, Jacqueline Durran. "This scene sets up the change that is happening to Barbie as she becomes human and enters the real world."
Designer Durran's yellow was a deliberate choice, to contrast with the bright and dominant pink of almost all of the film's outfits. "We wanted a soft yellow and less pop. So we printed the yellow on a piece of silk and because of the cut, it stuck to the body. That's not a Barbie characteristic when it comes to the model typical, as the cuts for the famous doll are a line not attached to the body, but somewhat loose”.
The outfit is also completed with an accessory, a heart-shaped gold pendant. Durran says this is also intentional: "Earlier in the film, the doll has accessories or big heart-shaped earrings that she wears at parties, but there's something about that pendant that makes her more human."
