In 1983, Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas was traveling with the late Jane Birkin from Paris to London. The bag was created after the CEO of Hermès saw Birkin's documents scattered everywhere during the flight. At that moment, he proposed to design a bag especially for her and sketched the idea on a cardboard bag that is given on the plane to passengers who are not feeling well.
