The UN warned that El Niño is here and the world should prepare for extreme heat.
El Niño is a natural climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean that brings warmer than average sea surface temperatures and has a major impact on weather across the globe, affecting billions of people.
With the temperatures rising, staying cool is looking increasingly difficult, but not impossible. Consider all the following tips to cope with this period as well as possible:
- Cold baths
If you love hot baths, maybe it's time to skip that pleasure for a while and replace it with a cold shower, which not only keeps your body temperature cool, but during the summer it also helps you sleep better at night.
- Food
Eat small, light meals and eat more often. Heavy meals add more heat as the body works harder to digest them.
- Clothes
The best solution is light colored clothes, with fresh materials such as cotton, linen or silk.
- Sun cream
Remember to apply sunscreen and reapply every 2-3 hours, especially if you are exposed to the sun.
- Stay hydrated
Dehydration can give you mood swings and fatigue, so don't miss any opportunity you have to drink water (or hydrate through foods that contain water).
- The lagoon
In cases where you just can't take it anymore: Dip your shirt, hat or a towel in cold water and use it to cool off.
What ages should be more careful? Children under 5 years old and adults over 65 years old. The most at risk are those with chronic diseases of the heart, kidneys, liver, diabetes, hypertension, etc.
