Christine Dawood, whose husband Shahzada and son Suleman died on the Titan submarine, has revealed that she intended to take part in the expedition but gave up so her son could go.
The family had planned a submarine trip, Dawood told the BBC in her first interview since the tragedy, but the trip was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
She had planned to make the trip with her husband because Suleman was very young at the time. "Then I pulled over and gave way to Suleman because he really wanted to go," she said.
"I was really happy for them because they both wanted to do this trip for a long time," she added.
She also revealed that the 19-year-old was obsessed with the Rubik's cube, which he took with him on the submarine. "He said, 'I'm going to solve the Rubik's Cube 3,700 meters under the sea on the Titanic,'" she added.
The Dawood family is a well-known family of the business world in Pakistan. Dawood Hercules Corp., their business, is among the largest companies in the country and includes energy, petrochemicals, information technology, and food and agriculture.
Shahzada and Suleman joined an expedition with the submarine Titan to see the wreck of the Titanic. The submarine disappeared on June 18, about 1 hour and 45 minutes after its dive. On Thursday, debris from the submarine was recovered by search teams, indicating that the Titan had suffered a catastrophic explosion that killed five people on board.
