World Press Photo, the independent non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, known for its annual competition of photos distributed in the media, judged the photos of the year.
The photo of Evgeniy Maloletka was chosen as the "Photo of the Year", who shot the shocking image where several emergency workers transport a pregnant woman through the destroyed maternity hospital of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol.
The photo shockingly expresses the horror experienced, where the wounded woman holds her hand on her bloody stomach.

The 32-year-old, Iryna Kalinina, died of her injuries half an hour after giving birth to the lifeless body of her baby, named Miron, which means "peace".

Ukrainian photographer Evgeniy Maloletka was one of the few photographers documenting events in Mariupol at the time. "We came to Mariupol just an hour before the invasion," Maloletka said.
"For 20 days, we lived with medical teams in the basement of the hospital and in shelters with ordinary citizens, trying to show the fear that Ukrainians lived with."
"Story of the year" was awarded to Mads Nissen for the photo series entitled "Afghanistan Peace Prize", which depicts the daily life of people in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime.
