Scientists have long been interested in finding out more about gray hair, and now a new study may have revealed why hair turns gray.
Researchers at New York University Grossman believe that some stem cells (McSCc) may become stagnant with age and lose their ability to mature and maintain hair color.
Some stem cells – which are able to develop into different types of cells – lose the ability to move with age, resulting in gray hair.
The research team suggests that if their study, which focused on mice, holds true in humans, they may find a way to restore hair color or prevent graying.
The research is still in its early stages and more studies need to be conducted, although these data are a step forward in understanding the complex biology of hair color and aging.
